Priscilla C. Johnson Shares the Book That Changed Her Life

February 28, 2017 by Chandra Sparks Splond

Priscilla C. JohnsonEqual Employment Opportunity/ADA Coordinator Priscilla C. Johnson knows a thing or two about books—in fact she has a book club celebrating that love. I recently spoke with her about the book that changed her life.

What is the book that changed your life?
Sugar by Bernice McFadden

Tell me about the book.
Sugar tells that story of Pearl—a  woman who is so overcome with grief that she closes herself off to the everything until she meets a young woman by the name of Sugar.

Sugar is a free spirit who unlocks many things hidden secrets and desires in Pearl that she becomes consumed in wanting to be with Sugar all the time.   Yet, there is a mystery surrounding the relationship of Sugar and Pearl that eventually causes more heartache.

Why did it impact you?
This story demonstrates how a person gets so consumed in grief that the things that are important become nonexistent.  It’s a story about self-discovery; acceptance; impact of secrets, lies, friendship, and love.  It is a very difficult book to read, but any reader will not want to put it down once they have started.

Is there anything you would like to add?
The vivid and colorful language use by McFadden made it difficult to put the book down.  At times it will make you scream and cry at the same time.

    Hey Cilla! 🙂

I’ve heard a lot of good things about Sugar. I haven’t read it yet though. So many books, so little time!
