Author and Screenwriter La Jill Hunt Is Living ‘Large’

March 12, 2021 by Chandra Sparks Splond

Whether it’s working on a television show or writing a book, La Jill Hunt is all about bring entertainment and drama. I recently spoke with her about her latest release, Large and in Charge.

Tell me about your latest book.
My latest book is Large and in Charge, an emotional tale of friendship, love, and resilience with a hint of romance and like all of my previous novels, lots of DRAMA. Devyn and Asha are lifelong BFFs who support one another as they navigate the highs and lows of life, find true love, pursue new dreams, let go of past hurts and try to hold on to their friendship in the process.

What inspired you to write it?
There was really no inspiration, honestly. There was a mix-up with the publisher and somehow the title got assigned to me. I had no idea what the book was going to be about or what was going to happen. I was stuck in front of a blank page for a minute (days, lol) trying to think. One word stuck out in my mind, pivot. It resonated and I knew that no matter what the story was about, it had to center around that word.

When did you fall in love with the written word?
Probably when I was a toddler. My mother was a scholar, and instead of toys, she’d buy me books and tracing paper. I learned to read and write when I was three years old.

What’s the best part of being an author?
Creating characters, storylines and situations that people enjoy. I believe one of my life’s purposes is to entertain people in some type of capacity. Being an author allows me to do that.

What’s the hardest part of being an author?
Having the discipline to write the characters, storylines and situations I create so people can enjoy them. Being an author takes a lot of discipline and focus, and I struggle with both.  Also, I haven’t reached a level of comfort that allows me to promote my work as I probably should.

What books have you read lately and loved?
Behind the Scenes by Christina C. Jones

The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz

Lust by Victoria Christopher Murray

What book(s) are you most excited to read next?
I committed to reading books that will help my personal growth the first quarter of the year, so next up for me is You Are a Badass: How To Stop Doubting Your Greatness and Start Living an Awesome Life by Jen Sincero.

What’s next for you?
Next is continuing to write for the tv show The Family Business on BET Plus, my first Christmas/holiday novel is being released in November, and the followup to both Private Property and Imitation of Wife are forthcoming at some point

Do you have anything you would like to add?
I appreciate those who enjoy and respect my work and rock with me from a genuine place of positivity. I hope I continue to create content for readers and supporters that are entertained by my unique stories of people who are just as flawed as I am.
