Author K.D. Richards is bringing love to light in her latest release. I recently spoke with her about Under the Cover of Darkness.
Tell me about your latest book.
Under the Cover of Darkness is about dogged police detective Yara Thomas and attorney Brandon West who team up to find the killer of a young woman that Brandon was representing. In the process, they uncover a vast conspiracy and find that they may mean more to each other than they realized.
Why did you decide to write it?
Well, Brandon is one of the West brothers who has appeared in prior West Investigations books supporting his younger brothers. He’s always been clever and there for his brothers when they needed him, and I wanted to give him his own story and show that his brothers could be there for him as well.
Who is your favorite character in the book and why?
Yara is one of my favorite characters and maybe most like me. She’s a bit reserved, even somewhat standoffish, until you get to know her. Then she’s quirky and snarky and loyal to a fault.
What was the hardest part about writing the story?
There was a lot of research that I needed to do in order to get the plot to work. I mentioned there is a conspiracy that Yara and Brandon uncover, and without giving too much away, it required me to look into how certain criminals might behave. It was fun though.
If you were to write a book about your life, what would be the title and why?
I’m sure someone has used this one before, but I like it for my memoirs too if I ever write any—The Write Stuff.
If your book were made into a movie, who would you pick to play the main characters?
Logan Browning could play Yara, and Trevanté Rhodes could play Brandon.
Tell me about a book that changed your life and why.
I always say The Westing Game is the reason I became a writer. It’s a brilliant children’s middle grade by Ellen Raskins that has wonderful character arcs and a really interesting complex mystery. It’s wonderful for kids and adults alike.
What would you tell your 16-year-old self?
Work hard, don’t worry so much, and enjoy being a kid more.
What’s next for you?
Another book in the West Investigations series. The next book, A Stalker’s Prey, will be out in January.
Do you have anything you would like to add?
No. Thanks so much for the interview.
