Author W Mason Dunn is back with another romance that’s sure to tug at the heartstrings. I recently spoke with her about Hearts on Hold.
Tell me about your latest book.
Hearts on Hold is a story about love, loss, and the courage to try again. Daisy had the perfect love story—until her husband died unexpectedly. Zeke thought he had it all, only to be shattered by betrayal that followed him even after his wife’s death. When these two wounded hearts meet in Tallahassee, something begins to stir between them. But they both carry deep emotional scars, and family members aren’t exactly cheering them on. This book is about grief, redemption, second chances, and how healing is possible—even when it feels out of reach.
Why did you decide to write it?
I wanted to explore what it looks like to try again after deep loss. I see myself in Daisy—how hard it is to let go of the past and still honor it while opening your heart to something new. Writing this story allowed me to pour my experiences and faith into something honest and redemptive.
What do you want readers to learn from the story?
That nothing is impossible with God. Grief might change us, but it doesn’t disqualify us from love. There’s beauty in starting over, and even in broken places, God can write something beautiful.
When did you fall in love with the written word?
I’ve been writing all my life. But I truly fell in love with storytelling by listening to my older siblings. They would tell the most creative, lesson-filled stories, and I was captivated. I knew early on that I wanted to do the same—tell stories that speak to the heart.
If you could pick another profession, what would it be and why?
I’d love to own a brick-and-mortar bookstore. A cozy, welcoming space full of stories, faith, and good coffee—that sounds like a dream to me. I love the idea of building community around books.
What’s the best part of being an author?
Hearing from readers. When someone tells me my story touched them or helped them see God, that’s everything. It reminds me that writing is more than words—it’s ministry.
What’s the worst part of being an author?
Sometimes the vulnerability. Pouring your heart onto the page then releasing it into the world is a brave thing. You hope people will understand your characters and their journeys, but it’s always a leap of faith.
What books have you read lately and loved?
I love Pat Simmons’ books. All of her stories speak to me. There’s something about the way she weaves faith, family, and romance that always ministers to my spirit.
What’s next for you?
I’m working on a new story about Daisy’s son, Liam. He and his fiancée, Lorraine, are planning their wedding—but life throws some unexpected challenges their way. The question is: Will they make it to the altar?
Do you have anything you would like to add?
Just a thank you to every reader who picks up my books. Whether you’re grieving, healing, or just holding on to hope—I see you. And I pray my stories remind you that God still writes beautiful endings.
