It’s such a thrill to have author Tiffany D. Jackson stop by today to talk about her latest release, Blood in the Water.
Tell me about your latest book.
Blood in the Water is about a Brooklyn girl name Kaylani, who, after her father’s recent incarceration, is forced to spend a few weeks of her summer vacation at a family friend’s home on the island of Martha’s Vineyard, She must navigate the new waters of this black upper-class society with a beach backdrop, including dealing with stuck-up kids she shares a home with. Until one day, a popular teen boy is found dead on the beach, by an infamous bridge. Some believe it was a shark attack, while others believe a murderer is on the loose. Kaylani is determined to help her new friends solve the mystery, but discovers there’s more to the island and the families who vacation there than meets the eye. Secrets are uncovered that could change even her own life.
Why did you decide to write it?
I get this question a lot! Truth is I love Martha’s Vineyard [MV] so much. When you’re there, It feels like you’re in your own world. Beautiful, safe, and free. And as a thriller writer…of course I start coming up with different dangerous scenarios and ways to escape.
What was your most memorable experience writing the story?
Going to MV as an author and not a tourist to do research for the book.
When did you fall in love with the written word?
Probably around four years old. I also loved stories, both movies and books, but when I realized I could write my own stories, that changed the game. I started making books out of construction paper and crayons.
If you could pick another profession, what would it be and why?
I’d probably still work in TV. I loved being a line producer. Or, I’d own a tea shop!
What’s the best part of being an author?
The writing! I love creating new stories. I love seeing them come together.
What’s the worst part of being an author?
The admin work! You must be your own HR department, accountant, assistant, marketing department, PR, etc. All that on top of regular adulting can be exhausting.
What books have you read lately and loved?
Such Quiet Girls by Noelle W Ihli and Before I Let Go by Kennedy Ryan
What books are you excited to read next?
I have a pretty big TBR pile but next up is The Summer I Ate the Rich by Maika and Maritza Moulite
What’s next for you?
More writing, more books. I’m excited to announce my next projects.
