The season’s not over yet, and author Michelle Lindo-Rice wants it to be one to remember. I recently spoke with her about her latest release, A Summer for the Books.
Tell me about your latest release.
A Summer for the Books is a story about best friends who have a secret between them. A secret that binds them closer but ultimately, drives them apart. But, this is the summer where the friends are united and all will be revealed. The question then becomes, will their friendship survive?
Why did you decide to write it?
I honestly wanted to challenge myself as an author. It is a very ambitious project where you have dual timelines, a book within a book, three POVs, and so details and timing are really important. But, I am hoping my readers will stick with me for the ride, because it really is a summer for the books!
What was your most memorable experience writing this book?
My most memorable experience honestly occurred during the rewrite. It was tough, tough, tough. It was one that stretched me in ways I couldn’t imagine, but I got through it. I also loved Lacey’s character and her storyline. She wasn’t planned, but she poked me, saying she wanted to be heard.
Which character in the book would you like to have as a best friend and why?
This is such a great question… Hmmm. I think everyone needs a Roman in their lives. He is such a strong support for Jewel. Her rock. I am hoping readers will connect with him.
What’s something readers would be surprised to learn about you?
I don’t know if I have anything surprising, but I think that they see all these books coming out and think this is easy for me. I have to pump myself up all the time. It is tough stuff to sit and put words down at times.
What do you like to do when you’re not writing?
I love to sing, binge watch, read other books, scroll on social media and try to figure out who these new celebrities are and the current drama going on.
What’s the most difficult part of being an author?
That you put yourself out there and you just don’t know how they will react to a book. I think that is really scary, every time. You pray and hope they connect to the story you tried to tell. This is a lonely world at times, and so it is great to have a network of friends.
Who are some of your favorite authors, and what are some of their books you love?
I love Sadeqa Johnson’s books—Yellow Wife, in particular. I have just been given an ARC of her newest book, and I am excited to read. I read Victoria Christopher Murray, Rhonda McKnight, ReShonda Tate, Vanessa Riley… So many authors, I can’t possibly name them all. Farrah Rochon’s Pugs and Kisses is also on my to-read list.
What’s next for you?
I am currently working on finishing out two books under contract under my other pen name. After that, I am looking forward to reading and relaxing a bit. I have a couple of other ideas, but not sure where I want to go. I also do want to focus on working with my clients as a literary agent, so I might spend some time focused there.
Do you have anything you would like to add?
Thank you for all you do for authors. This is such a wonderful platform to celebrate us and our work.
