Author Patricia Sargeant is back with another installment of her Brooklyn Monarchs series. I recently spoke with her about Her Greatest Fan.
Tell me about your latest book.
Hi, Chandra! Thank you so very much for inviting me back to chat with your community at Black Fiction Addiction. I love your community and really appreciate this opportunity.
My latest release, Her Greatest Fan, is the sixth book in my seven-book sports romance series, Brooklyn Monarchs. The Monarchs are a dysfunctional NBA team. I don’t mean to be hurtful, but there it is.
Her Greatest Fan is Barron and Tianna’s love story. We met Barron in the first Brooklyn Monarchs book, Fast Break, which followed the team’s Cinderella season. He was struggling with alcoholism and in denial about his addiction.
In the second book, Smooth Play, Barron asked to be put on the injured list while he entered an addiction program. Yay! Now he’s back and trying to prove his worth to his team and himself. Unfortunately, the stress of the season and reminders of his previous lifestyle are proving to be more of a challenge than he’d anticipated. Enter Tianna.
Tianna also is a recovering alcoholic. This isn’t her first attempt—or even her third—to stop drinking. This time, though, she’s stronger. As a bonus, her past experiences make her more understanding of what Barron’s going through. But can Barron accept he’s worthy of a constructive future and Tianna’s love?
Why did you decide to write it?
Thank you for asking this question! Barron needed a redemption story. As I mentioned, when we first met him, Barron was in a very bad place. He’s not a bad character. He just had flaws. To his credit, he wanted to overcome those weaknesses. We see Barron making that journey over the first five books in the series. He’s so close to his redemption. What will it take for him to complete that journey?
Who is your favorite character and why?
Oh, for this story, I have to say my favorite character is Tianna. I love so many characters in my Brooklyn Monarchs world: Jaclyn, DeMarcus, Marlon, Vinny; so many. But in this story, Tianna stands out. She’s strong, kind and fiercely protective of the people she cares for.
When did you fall in love with the written word?
I was nine years old when I fell in love with reading.
If you could pick another profession, what would it be and why?
I’d love to make a living with an online craft store through which I could sell some of the items I crochet, knit and sew. I’d learn other crafts like sculpting and sell those items, too.
What author would you fangirl over?
There are so many. So many. For today, I’ll say K.D. Richards. I love her intrigue plots and her writing voice. Love her.
What books have you read lately and loved?
One of the books I recently read and loved was Barbara Howard’s Lost History Between Us. It’s such a clever plot.
What books are you most excited to read next?
Full disclosure: I’m so pitifully behind on my reading. Pitifully behind. Paula Lennon’s Murder in Montego Bay was recommended to me. I’m excited to finally dive into it.
What’s next for you?
Thank you so much for asking! I’m juggling several projects right now, including a proposal for a new cozy mystery trilogy and a proposal for a four-book suspense series. However, I’m super excited to launch my romantic suspense trilogy, Justice Hunters, next year. This is a project I’ve wanted to publish for 18 years. Yes, I’m that old. Ha! The trilogy features three sisters who are involved in the justice system in some way. The oldest is a homicide detective. The middle sister is a city prosecutor and the youngest is a true crime podcaster. The trilogy follows them—and the cases they get involved in—as they try to solve their beloved aunt’s homicide cold case. The first book in the trilogy, Behind the Badge, will be released February 2026, and it’s available for preorder now.
