Author T. Tonette wants readers to know love is worth the risk. I recently spoke with her about her release, After Never Now.
Tell me about your latest book.
After Never Now is a story about two people who’ve shut their hearts off. They’re guarded, they’ve built walls, and neither is looking to let anyone in again. But life doesn’t always ask permission. When their worlds collide, they’re forced to face the very thing they thought they were done with. It’s about that one last chance you don’t expect, and what happens when you risk taking it.
How long did it take you to write it?
One year.
Which character could you relate to the most and why?
I relate to Nona because of her resilience, being strong, and no-nonsense approach. No matter what had happened in the past or what she’s going to face in the future, she keeps moving forward. Life doesn’t pause until everything falls into place; you carry on anyway. That’s what I see in her and in myself, the strength to step into tomorrow even when yesterday tried to hold you back, and the courage to make and take bold moves most aren’t brave enough to take.
How are you celebrating the book’s release?
I celebrated with a book signing with a complimentary wine tasting at a local winery. I also celebrated by supporting other independent authors by purchasing and sharing their books. I am so blessed, and I want to be a blessing to others, especially knowing how hard it can be starting as an independent author.
Who is your author best friend (either in your head or in real life)?
Brenda Jackson (in my head lol). I did get to meet her in person this summer!
What is the most valuable piece of writing advice you’ve received?
You can’t let critical feedback upset you. Write your book! No matter how it looks during the draft and edits, you can continually refine. You may be the author someone is looking for based on the story and your unique writing style. Lastly, don’t compare your books and writing style to others. Be you, and that’s enough.
What books have you read lately and loved?
Brenda Jackson’s Spilling The Tea. Too many others to name.
What books are you excited to read?
Masters Of The Game—Brenda Jackson
The Queen of Sugar Hill—ReShonda Tate
King of Ashes—S.A. Cosby
What’s next for you?
Tentatively, my second release is set for December 2025, and my third release is scheduled for 2026. Additionally, connecting with book clubs and engaging with readers. I’m also looking forward to participating in book festivals and collaborating with other authors. For me, it’s about building community around the stories, sharing experiences, and being present where the conversations about books are happening.
Do you have anything you would like to add?
I started by publishing a short story ebook titled A Steel Reckoning. Published January 2025. My first published work.
