Elle Wright is letting sparks fly in her latest release. I recently spoke with her about The Ex Dilemma.
Tell me about your latest book.
The Ex Dilemma follows Wesley Batchelor, a commitment-phobic heir who has had his fair share of troubles. Now, he’s the subject of a smear campaign, spearheaded by an influencer. On top of that, his powerful grandmother has issued her own high-stakes ultimatum: marry or lose your inheritance. Enter his ex, private investigator Albany Keyes. She’s hired to help him track down the mysterious social media saboteur. As much as Albany wants to avoid him, she can’t help but be drawn to Wes. Sparks fly. Soon, the two of them have to make a decision: Give in to the pull or walk away.
Why did you decide to write it?
Actually, the idea came to mind years ago, in 2021. The pandemic had taken a toll on my creativity, and I couldn’t figure out what I wanted to do next. Yet, I had a vision of a grandmother being so disappointed in her children that she decides to give her grandchildren an ultimatum—marry while I’m alive to see it or lose your inheritance.
Who is your favorite character and why?
While I love Wesley and Albany, I found myself drawn to their grandmothers, Granny Joyce and Grandma Liv. They were so funny! I cracked myself up writing those scenes. But Albany’s grandmother, Grandma Liv, has a special place in my heart. She kind of reminds me of my own grandmother. Strong and witty with no filter.
When did you fall in love with the written word?
My mother was an educator, and she brought home books all the time. I still remember my first chapter book, Beezus and Ramona by Beverly Clearly. I devoured it and wanted more.
If you could pick another profession, what would it be and why?
I think about this all the time. It changes every year or so. I’m an accountant at my day job, but if I could choose to do something else…nursing.
What author would you fangirl over?
This question will always have the same answer, even though I know her in real life. Ha! But I fangirl over Beverly Jenkins all the time. Reading Indigo changed my life! I fell in love with Black romance.
What books have you read lately and loved?
I rarely have time to read, especially while writing. I recently read an early copy of A Harlem Wedding by Tiffany L. Warren. I also went through the Bae Reimagined Series featuring books by Sherelle Green, Angela Seals, Sheryl Lister, Kelsey Green, A.C. Arthur, Aja, Tiye, Cassie Verano, Kimmie Ferrell. Loved them all!
What books are you most excited to read next?
I recently started a little book club with my daughter and best friend. Looking forward to reading The Reformatory by Tananarive Due.
What’s next for you?
Lord, I’m tired just thinking about it. LOL This year, I’ll finally finish the Young in Love Series. Next year, book 2 in the Batchelor Life series will release.
Do you have anything you would like to add?
