Bestselling author Michelle Stimpson has a way of tapping into real life, and her latest release is no exception. I recently spoke with her about You Can’t Hurry Second Chances.
Tell me about your latest book.
You Can’t Hurry Second Chances is a story about starting over, deciding what you want and need in this next phase, and embracing that things may not look exactly how you thought they would look, but they are still good. It’s also a story about finding your voice when systems, family members, or even your own guilt try to silence you. The main character (Joyce) finds herself in a “silver divorce” after 30 years of marriage. She’s starting over in a small town in her deceased father’s home. She had hoped to convert it to a duplex, but the funds ran low, and she ends up sharing more space than she wanted to with her tenant, Gabriella, who loves to cook and needs all that kitchen space for her delicious creations. Joyce and Gabriella form an unlikely friendship, which they’re going to need once a third housemate arrives, along with Joyce’s friction with an old flame (not to mention the government). It is quite the story of found family and hope!
How long did it take you to write it?
This one took me about six months, and I thoroughly enjoyed writing it!
Which character could you relate to the most and why?
I would have to say Joyce. Her most important relationships are undergoing serious renovations, and this I understand deeply as a wife, a mother of young adult children, a grandmother, even as an employee. Transitions occur in life. Some are happy, some sad, and some bittersweet. I’m walking all up in Joyce’s shoes right now!
Who is your author best friend (either in your head or in real life)?
I’m reading lots of young adult fiction right now to keep up with my role as a curriculum coordinator. Jason Reynolds is my current author bestie because the students love his work, and he reminds me of why I started writing in the first place–to get my own students to read!
What is the most valuable piece of writing advice you’ve received?
“Don’t be married to your first draft.”
What books have you read lately and loved?
Ooh! So many! I thoroughly enjoyed the writing in Kin, appreciated the storyline of The Seven Daughters of Dupree. I finally read Only for the Week, and I’m checking out This Story Might Save Your Life because the audio is very unique.
What’s next for you?
I have a senior sleuth character in mind…I can hardly wait to start writing her because the plot is soooo alive in my head!
Do you have anything you would like to add?
Thank you so much for this opportunity!
