Looking for your next great read by an author of color? It can be as close as your mailbox, thanks to a new subscription service. Magic City Momma recently spoke with Sanura Williams, founder of My Lit Box.
Tell me about My Lit Box.
My Lit Box was founded in April 2016 and it is a monthly book subscription box that highlights writers of colors. Each month our subscribers receive a box containing a newly released novel and one or two bookish items that relate to that month’s theme.
Why did you decide to start it?
I had grown disenchanted with working in a role that did not align with my passions, so I began to brainstorm on what I loved most, and books were at the top of the list. Things then began to organically fall into place, and all signs pointed toward getting started in the subscription box business.
Who is eligible to join, and what can members expect?
My Lit Box is open to and welcomes everyone! Members can expect a unique experience that sets us apart from other book subscription boxes. We are about diversity first and foremost, and we celebrate this each month by putting the works of writers of colors into the hands of booklovers all over.
What has been the most surprising thing to happen since launching My Lit Box?
I think the response I’ve gotten from people supporting this idea is what has been the biggest surprise. It’s one thing to have an idea you believe in, but it’s an entirely different feeling when strangers validate your idea and are excited to sign up and support My Lit Box each month.
What do you want women to learn from your business?
From my business, I want women to learn that you can create your lifestyle, your future, and your happiness. I was so close to being resigned to punching the clock every day at a job I no longer enjoyed, but when I thought about someone else executing my idea and having the success that could’ve easily been mine, I did not want that to happen. I came up with a plan, stepped out on faith and I have no regrets!
What is the biggest lesson you want people to learn from your life?
The biggest lesson I want people to learn from my life is that it’s never too late to chase your dreams. Regardless of how old you are, how many years you’ve been on the job, how much money you’re making, do not allow any of these things to deter your from your dreams.
What advice do you have for women who are juggling a career with pursuing their dreams?
I will not sell you any false ideas. It’s hard. There are only 24 hours in a day, and we wear so many hats. We’re mothers, wives, employees, counselors, friends…the list goes on. But if you truly believe in your dreams, then they are worth pursuing. It may mean an hour less of sleep or not making this brunch or that happy hour, but it’s worth it. My advice is to share your ideas with people who will support you, write it down so you can see your dreams in writing, and come up with a flexible game plan so you have a sense of direction.
What’s next for Sanura Williams and My Lit Box?
Growth, both professionally and personally. I want to continue to build My Lit Box and its community and put this product into the hands of as many people as possible, and I also want to continue to learn and become a stronger, smarter, savvier businesswoman.
