Author She Nell drew from personal experience to pen her latest release. I recently spoke with her about Walking Crooked with Christ.
Tell me about your latest book.
Walking Crooked with Christ is my latest book. Jas’Mia knows God, but she also knows death, loneliness, struggle, and pain. Jas’Mia thinks she has lost the love of her life, Bobby, to Shelby, the woman he has decided to marry. Jas’Mia seems to have lost everything, but soon blessings appear. Carlos is everything a woman could want in a Godly man. Money falls like rain and washes her struggles away, but doing the right thing is not easy to do when wrong feels right.
What inspired you to write it?
I was in an interview for a podcast, and we begin to talk about the walk of a believer. I remembered how when I started my Christian walk, I thought that everything was going to be perfect, and it was not. As the interview went on, I felt very comfortable being imperfect me who loved Christ. I wanted to tell a story [that] spoke to the point of loving God even when you are flawed and how He continues to love us. Warts and all as some would say.
When did you fall in love with the written word?
As a child we were encouraged to read. I had series of books and would often take trips to the library and bookstore. Books are still everywhere in my house as an adult.
What’s the best part of being an author?
Meeting readers and having them talk to you about the characters that have spent months living in your head.
What’s the hardest part of being an author?
Navigating and balancing the business side of being an author. Sitting in coffee houses on rainy days while listening to jazz and typing is a very small part of the process. When you sign up to be an author you are also signing up to be a business.
What books have you read lately and loved?
I read When All Is Said and Prayed—for the second time—by E.N. Joy, Bible Chicks by Khara Campbell and Show Don’t Tell by Sandra Gerth.
What book(s) are you most excited to read next?
Currently on my list are Love and Other Lies We Tell by Candace Harris, Forever by Vanessa Miller and Love Discovered by Michelle Stimpson.
What’s next for you?
I am working learning more about the craft of writing and writing my next book Sitting on the Fence. I am planning to release it and a couple new titles in 2021.
