Author Kianna Alexander is back with a new entry in her 404 Sound series. I recently spoke with her about After Hours Attraction.
Tell me about your latest book.
After Hours Attraction centers around Gage Woodson, a high-powered operations executive at his family’s recording studio, and his assistant, single mom Ainsley Voss. They’ve worked together for years, dancing around their attraction to each other. But a business trip with an unexpected weather delay leaves them stranded in middle-of-nowhere Louisiana, and the close quarters force them to face their feelings.
What inspired you to write it?
It’s the second book in my five-book 404 Sound series. The entire series is inspired by my love of Southern hip-hop; many would say Atlanta is the cradle of the genre.
When did you fall in love with the written word?
As a kid, I read voraciously and I think it definitely started there. I didn’t see myself reflected in the books I read but I still enjoyed reading.
What’s the best part of being an author?
Being able to get paid to do something I love and something I’m good at, telling stories.
What’s the hardest part of being an author?
Managing deadlines and balancing my work with a sometimes hectic family life.
What books have you read lately and loved?
I have so little time for reading for pleasure; this has been true since I started seriously publishing. I did recently read The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz, which I loved, and I’m currently listening to Brene Brown’s Rising Strong as an audiobook. I’ve found audio is the easiest for me because I usually listen while driving or taking care of some household tasks.
What book(s) are you most excited to read next?
I’m excited to catch up on my Beverly Jenkins reading with Wild Rain, and the last three books of Reese Ryan’s Bourbon Brothers series are also in my [to-be-read] pile.
Who would you cast in a movie to play your main characters?
I always make up a character sheet when I write, so I can fully flesh my characters out. Part of that sheet is the character inspiration. For this book, Gage was inspired by the actor Stephen James (If Beale Street Could Talk), and Ainsley is inspired by the R&B singer Elle Varner.
What’s next for you?
I’m not sure of my next release date, but Carolina Built, a historical fiction novel about the life of real estate businesswoman Josephine Leary, is now in edits and is coming sometime in late 2021/early 2022.
