You’ve never seen Black romance author Mya quite like this before. She’s visiting today to discuss her first traditionally published release, Burden of Love.
Tell me about your latest release.
Burden of Love is like Scandal meets Law & Order meets All Rise. It follows the lives of Talia and Maddox. Talia is a novice lawyer trying to make a name for herself, and Maddox is a seasoned detective who has to do a little dirt to keep the bills paid. It’s a beautiful journey that showcases Black love in a raw and emotional way.
Why did you decide to write it?
I had three or four concepts I presented to the publishing company. They all agreed this one was the most captivating and exciting to use as my introductory into the [traditional] world.
What was your most memorable experience writing this book?
The most memorable moment I had while writing this book was doing so while I was basically homeless. I spent a few months without an address to my name while crafting this story, which was why it didn’t come out last year as my pen sisters’ books had.
Which character in the book would you like to have as a best friend and why?
I would like to have Monique as a best friend. She was a ride or die for Talia and remained a good voice of reason throughout the story.
What’s something readers would be surprised to learn about you?
I skip sex scenes when I’m reading a book. I really don’t care for them in my own stories either lol. If I could write clean books, I would.
What do you like to do when you’re not writing?
I love to read, watch movies, spend time with my kids, and play video games. I am a woman with many talents.
What’s the most difficult part of being an author?
The most difficult part about being an author is the marketing and promotion. I love to write because it’s just me and the characters. Once the story is done and I have to do the other parts, it becomes tedious.
Who are some of your favorite authors, and what are some of their books you love?
Starting with the OGs: Zora Neale Hurston, and my favorite book by her is Their Eyes Were Watching God. I also love Toni Morrison. My favorite book by her is Sula.
Now for authors currently in my area of writing, I love me some B. Love and Kimberly Brown. B. Love’s entire catalog is HIT AFTER HIT. Kimberly won me over with The Last Sad Love Song. They both create such beautiful stories of love, healing, and romance. I love those ladies DOWN!
What’s next for you?
I have several events coming up: 4Bs in Mesquite, TX, hosted by Monica Walters in March. I also have Pages and Prosecco in Houston, TX, in March. That one is hosted by Zee Renee. I will be at the Black Romance Book Festival in Atlanta as well.
I plan to drop seven more books this year, including a spin-off to Love’s Infusion series.
I also plan to test the waters in a few new genres, including dark romance.
Do you have anything you would like to add?
I appreciate the opportunity, and I hope every reader who picks up a book by Mya is left feeling all the butterflies and warmth. My books will always put Black Women and Black LOVE at the forefront.
