Author S.M. Grady Shares the ‘Secret’ to Her Success

May 16, 2025 by Chandra Sparks Splond

Author S.M. Grady has a new release that is sure to be the perfect escape. I recently spoke with her about A Secret for Every Season.

Tell me about your latest book.
A Secret for Every Season is a story about four friends who have become closer than family and how they handle a bombshell of a secret that could destroy all of their relationships. The book explores love, honesty, and provides a realistic take on forgiveness after betrayal.

Why did you decide to write it?
I want to create stories for Black women that are entertaining, relatable, and do not include overarching themes of Black oppression and violence. I want to create a catalogue of escapism for women who look like me. This is just one of those stories.

Who is your favorite character and why?
Raquel is probably my favorite character overall because she has to overcome so much throughout the story, but she gives herself time to decide how she can best move forward. It’s not based on anyone else’s timeline or expectations.

When did you fall in love with the written word?
I’ve loved reading for as long as I can remember. By the time I was in kindergarten, it was already one of my favorite activities. That only increased as I got older and realized that I could learn about so many different topics and cultures through reading.

If you could pick another profession, what would it be and why?
If I could choose another profession today, I would be a multilingual translator. I think that would be another avenue to learn about other cultures. It would be satisfying to know that in my daily work-life, I would be helping individuals communicate in a language that they are not proficient in to get the services that they need. And I love to travel. It would be much easier to immerse myself in another culture if I could speak the language fluently.

What author would you fangirl over?
Judy Blume. I’ve been a fan of her books my entire life. She has written books for every age group, and I’ve probably read every one of them.

What books have you read lately and loved?
The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid

The Personal Librarian by Marie Benedict and Victoria Christopher Murray

What books are you most excited to read next?
Malibu Rising

What’s next for you?
I plan to release two more books before the end of this year. I am also looking into the steps to become an acquisitions editor.

Do you have anything you would like to add?
If you like stories that explore complicated relationships, family secrets, and second chances, you can should check out my other series, Black Rock Beach.
