Author Michele Sims ‘Rises’ to Success

June 26, 2026 by Chandra Sparks Splond

Author Michele Sims is giving readers what they want with her latest release. I recently spoke with her about Until the Sun Rises.

Tell me about your latest release.
Until the Sun Rises is a romantic suspense novel that follows newlyweds Mason “Mace” Moore and Carly Moore as they step into a long-awaited new chapter—marriage, healing, and the anticipation of their growing family. But just as they begin to build the life they once lost, danger threatens to unravel everything.

What starts as a personal vendetta quickly escalates into something far more dangerous, forcing them to confront past trauma, protect their future, and fight for the love they nearly didn’t get a second chance to experience. At its core, it’s a story about resilience, family, and the kind of love that refuses to break, even under pressure.

Why did you decide to write it?
Until the Sun Rises is a continuation of Forever Carly, and honestly, the readers asked for it.

So many people connected deeply with Mace and Carly’s journey—their history, their heartbreak, and their undeniable bond. Readers wanted to know what happened next. What does love look like after the reunion? After forgiveness? After loss?

This book answers those questions. It explores what happens when the fairytale doesn’t end at “I do,” but instead begins there, with real-life challenges, emotional growth, and unexpected danger.

What was your most memorable experience writing this book?
Without a doubt, visiting Charleston, South Carolina, as a writer and researcher. I was born and raised in Charleston, but being able to walk the same streets, see the water, feel the coastal breeze, and experience the culture from a different perspective brought the story to life in a way that my personal history alone couldn’t.

Charleston isn’t just a setting, it’s a mood, a rhythm, a character. From Folly Beach to downtown, every location added layers of authenticity, and I think readers will feel that richness woven throughout the story.

Which character would you want as a best friend and why?
Carly. She’s loyal, grounded, and emotionally intuitive. Carly is the kind of friend who shows up, and not just in the good times, but in the moments when you don’t even have the words to explain what you’re going through. She’s strong without being hard, compassionate without losing herself, and she loves deeply. That kind of friendship is rare and invaluable.

What’s something readers would be surprised to learn about you?
Readers might be surprised to know that many of the emotional layers in my stories are drawn from observation and lived experiences, not always my own, but from people and moments that have stayed with me. I’m deeply inspired by human connections, how people love, how they break, and how they rebuild. I pay attention to those nuances, and they often find their way into my characters.

What do you like to do when you’re not writing?
I love to travel. Exploring new places fuels my creativity and gives me fresh perspectives that I bring back into my storytelling. Whether it’s the culture, the scenery, or the people, every trip adds something new to my creative well. You can often find me sharing those experiences under the hashtag #blackgirlseeingtheworld.

What’s the most difficult part of being an author?
I find maintaining my authentic voice difficult at times. There’s always pressure to follow trends or write to market, but I’ve learned that the most powerful stories come from truth—my truth as a storyteller. Staying grounded in that, even when it feels risky, is both the challenge and the reward.

Who are some of your favorite authors?
I’m inspired by authors who write with depth, emotion, and purpose:

  • Maya Angelou—Her storytelling is timeless and deeply rooted in truth and resilience.
  • Aja—Her voice brings a unique and refreshing perspective to storytelling.
  • Kennedy Ryan—She masterfully blends romance with real-world issues and emotional depth.
  • Natasha Bishop—Her work resonates with authenticity and heart.

These authors remind me of the power of storytelling to move, heal, and inspire.

What’s next for you?
I’m currently working on a new book centered around Yara Shephard, one of Carly’s closest friends and a standout character in the series.

Yara is bold, brilliant, and fiercely independent, but beneath that strength is a woman navigating vulnerability, love, and the challenge of opening her heart.

Her story will explore romance, identity, and emotional growth, with a compelling dynamic involving two very different love interests. It’s layered, intense, and deeply personal. I’m excited for readers to experience her journey.
