Author Sheryl Lister knows there’s nothing like your sisters, and she’s using that premise for her latest release. I recently spoke with her about All My Sisters and Me.
Tell me about your latest book.
All My Sisters and Me tells the story of four sisters-in-law who are learning to be the sisters of the heart they were meant to be. It also highlights found family, not carrying the weight of the past into the present and reminding ourselves that we are enough. Our self-worth should not be defined by perfection or approval from others to be deserving of love, respect and a sense of belonging.
Why did you decide to write it?
This story was born from a conversation with one of my sisters-in-law over Thanksgiving preparations. She said I should write our story (of course, we don’t have any of the issues described in the book), so this one’s for her!
Who is your favorite character and why?
This is like asking who is my favorite child…lol! However, I have a strong affinity for Taylor because of her laid-back and fun personality. The banter between her and Austin was my absolute favorite to write.
When did you fall in love with the written word?
I honestly can’t recall a time when I didn’t have a book in my hand. Whether it was Amelia Bedelia and all her antics, Durango Street showing the realities of poverty and gang life, or Are You There God, It’s Me, Margaret that had every girl doing that exercise (IYKYK!), I always had my head in a book. I was the kid who went to the library every two weeks without fail, pored over the Scholastic book catalog for hours to ensure I got as many books as I could with that two dollars (whew, I know I’m dating myself). The librarian knew me by name and allowed me to check out as many books as I wanted, even though the limit was five. So, I’ve been in love with the written word my entire life.
If you could pick another profession, what would it be and why?
I would most likely go back to my previous career as a pediatric occupational therapist. I loved playing with my babies in the home/students at school and being able to see their eyes light up when they learn a new skill.
What author would you fangirl over?
I have fangirled over Beverly Jenkins, Brenda Jackson, Adrianne Byrd and AC Arthur. I would absolutely fangirl over Francis Ray because it was her book, Incognito, that let me know there were stories featuring people who looked like me.
What books have you read lately and loved?
I have just started reading To Breathe Again by Unoma Nwankwor and am loving it!
What books are you most excited to read next?
I’m looking forward to Suzette Harrison’s…release, With Her Baby on Her Back; Elle Wright’s The Baby Dilemma, and finally when I’m on my next writing break, diving into Sherelle Green’s Crowne Legacy series. I’m way behind on my reading, so there are a few others on my list, as well.
What’s next for you?
Next up, I’ll be working on three proposals for new books and finishing my Sassy Seasoned Sisters Series.
