Author LaQuette Is All About Second Chances

February 26, 2021 by Chandra Sparks Splond

Author LaQuette is back with her new Restoration Ranch series. I recently spoke with her about the first book of the series, Jackson.

Tell me about your latest book.
Jackson centers on second chances.  Everyone on Restoration Ranch rebuilds, renews, and restores themselves.  Both the hero and the heroine are carrying heavy things from their respective pasts that keep them from reaching their full potential.  Through a set of suspicious events unfolding on the ranch, they each find their way to redemption.

What inspired you to write it?
I liked the idea of remaking oneself.  Finding the good within, always believing that good will prevail.  As a Black woman, I’ve seen so many Black people who are written off by society whether it’s the educational system, the legal system, etc.  There are so many books about our downfall.  I wanted to write a story that focused on the uplifting nature of our ascension instead.

When did you fall in love with the written word?
Very early in my childhood. Probably before the age of ten.  I’ve always found writing the best way to articulate my thoughts.  That still remains the case.

What’s the best part of being an author?
I think that’s a two-fold answer.  Initially, the best part is seeing the finished product.  Watching something that started as a few broad, loose ideas turn into something cohesive and tangible is very exciting.  But after you release the book into the world, the best part is seeing how my words can affect readers.  Even when readers tell me they couldn’t stand my characters, I’m still tickled because it means my words stirred up some kind of emotion in you.

What’s the hardest part of being an author?
Deadlines and edits.  I love them both because they help get the work done.  But they are never fun while you’re in the middle of dealing with them.

What books have you read lately and loved?
I was fortunate enough to snag an ARC of Naima Simone’s Welcome to Rose Bend.  Whew! The world is not ready for that book.  There are so many feels in it.  And as always, Naima doesn’t know how to write a book that isn’t sexy, so it was definitely my catnip.  It releases on April 27 I’ve also read Rapper’s Delight by Kenya Goree Bell.  This book is an homage to the hip-hop music scene of the ‘90s and ‘00s. Being a teenager in Brooklyn in the ’90s, it definitely hit all of my nostalgia buttons.

What book(s) are you most excited to read next?
Adriana Herrera has her Sambrano Studios series coming out with Harlequin Desire in June.  I cannot wait.  Messy rich people with Afro-Latinx flavor, I’m here for it.

What’s next for you?
I’m currently working on a rom-com about three forty-something divorcees who find friendship, love, and a whole lot of sexy times in a small town in the Poconos.

Do you have anything you would like to add?
Thank you so much for having me.
