Author K.D. Richards is entering the world of romantic suspense with her new series. I recently spoke with her about Pursuit of the Truth.
Tell me about your latest book.
Pursuit of the Truth is a romantic suspense novel about hotel CEO, Nadia Shelton, who finds her life turned upside down after inheriting her family’s small hotel chain upon her brother’s death. Her brother has left her a host of problems, some of them potentially deadly. Ryan West runs the firm that provides security for Shelton Hotels and together he and Nadia set out to untangle the mystery surrounding Nadia’s brother’s death and the attempts that have recently been made on her life.
What inspired you to write it?
I think the plot and characters are a culmination of several interests in my life. The character of Nadia Shelton had been dancing around in my mind for a while. She grew out of my childhood dream of owning a hotel. That dream died pretty quickly once I realized owning a hotel was not nearly as fun as being a guest at one. In addition to mysteries and romances, I enjoy reading about true crimes, in particular financial crimes, so the plot evolved from that interest.
When did you fall in love with the written word?
I wrote my first short story at age eleven. I’d always loved reading but writing that story gave me the idea that I could be a writer (among other things. Like most kids, I wanted to be a dozen different things when I grew up J). But then life happens. I practiced law for many years but never stopped writing, usually on the train to and from work and on my lunch time. Very few people knew I wrote and even fewer had actually read anything I wrote.
What’s the best part of being an author?
Being able to do something that I really enjoy and am passionate about. I was a writer even when I was practicing law and teaching so it’s great to do it and have the work published and see people respond positively to it.
What’s the hardest part of being an author?
Everything! LOL. It’s not easy. Learning the craft of writing and continuing to hone the skills involved is work as with any other job. Coming up with interesting characters and plots and getting everything to work together…it can be daunting.
What books have you read lately and loved?
I just finished Lisa Unger’s Confessions on the 7:45 and really enjoyed it.
What book(s) are you most excited to read next?
I am looking forward to Elle Marr’s Lies We Bury. I just received it as part of Amazon First Reads, and I can’t wait to dive in. Her first book, The Missing Sister, was terrific.
Who would you cast in a movie to play your main characters?
Oh, that’s a hard one. Maybe Issa Rae as Nadia. She’s so crazy talented, it’s bordering on criminal. I think for Ryan maybe Winston Duke because in every photo I see of him he’s always very serious just like Ryan.
What’s next for you?
More books, thankfully! Books two and three in the West Investigations series will be out in the fall.
Do you have anything you would like to add?
Just thank you very much for the interview.
