Author Rhonda McKnight is back with the latest installment of her popular Bennett Family series. I recently spoke with her about All They Need.
Tell me about your latest book.
All They Need is the third book in a series about The Bennett Family. The Bennetts have reached the point in their lives where they are ready for love—or at least love is ready for them. Logan Bennett is a former NFL player turned hotelier. Although he had his reasons, years ago, Logan dumped his first love, Harper Ingram, and now he wants a second chance at her heart. Harper has always loved Logan, but she doesn’t believe she can trust him. After all, he’s shown her who he is in this regard. However, her interior design company is on the verge of financial ruin. Logan offers her a contract she can’t say no to, and she’s forced to work with him—closely. Readers go on a journey to find out if these two people will find their way back to each other.
What inspired you to write it?
I love second chances romance. It’s by far my favorite. The first two books in the series are rich man/poor girl and friends-to-lovers. I thought it was time to write one in my favorite category.
When did you fall in love with the written word?
When I learned to read at age five. I couldn’t write really, so I started telling my stories with pictures. I finished my first book at the age of six.
What’s the best part of being an author?
Readers! The feedback is a beautiful thing.
What’s the hardest part of being an author?
The multitasking. We all have to multitask in life, but this author multitasking requires octopus DNA for real.
What books have you read lately and loved?
I received an advance reader copy of Vanessa Riley’s Island Queen. I couldn’t put it down. Riley has become my favorite writer. I just finished Slay by Brittney Morris. It’s YA but it was fantastic. Envy by Victoria Christopher Murray. I enjoyed it and look forward to the Lifetime movie.
What book(s) are you most excited to read next?
The Yellow Wife by Sadeqa Johnson; An Earl, the Girl, and A Toddler by Vanessa Riley; A Low Country Bride by Preslaysa Williams; Sweet Tea by Piper Huguley; and another YA title, Legendborn by Tracey Deonn.
Who would you cast in a movie to play your main characters?
I had to give this some thought. I know I should, but I never think about film. For Harper, I’d choose Amirah Vann. She’s technically too old for the role, but when I tell you that Black is not cracking, it’s not. She can still play a solid 28-year-old and she’s become every character she’s done. She’s so underrated. As for Logan, I’m going to go with Aldis Hodge because I’ve been crushing on him for years. Both Vann and Hodge look a little like my cover models.
What’s next for you?
The fourth book in the Bennett Family series on June 21. It’s a story about Stone Bennett. Readers have been waiting to see this alpha playboy get corralled by a woman. Stone is a cowboy who runs a working ranch in the Georgia mountains. (Georgia has Black cowboys too.) He has been running from love for a long time, but I’m about to throw a lasso around his heart. I’m excited. I’ve been wanting to write a cowboy story for years.
Do you have anything you would like to add?
I have authored 17 novels and a few nonfiction books. In addition to romance, I write general women’s fiction. My Samaritan Woman series is a long-time reader favorite. The first book is An Inconvenient Friend. I’m also a freelance editor and writing coach. Details are at my website.
