Author Letrise T. Carter Is Keeping the ‘Faith’

July 21, 2021 by Chandra Sparks Splond

It’s turning out to be a busy year for author Letrise T. Carter. She’s back with a new installment in her popular Lucy Mason series.

Tell me about your latest book.
My latest book is a short story series titled Lucy Mason that has three parts: Lucy’s Worth, Lucy’s Faith, and Lucy’s Heart.  Lucy is a young adolescent who grows up pretty fast into womanhood who has to go on a journey of self-discovery to find herself starting with learning her self-worth, finding her faith and learning how to forgive those who hurt her, and then learning how to open her heart to true love.

What inspired you to write it?
There were a couple things that inspired me to write this storyline. The first being, the last 18 months, I was going through cancer treatment for breast cancer that made me doubt my worth, my faith, and my heart was hurting something awful because you truly learn who your real family and friends are when you get ill. The second inspiration was a Walter Mosley Masterclass homework assignment where he said to write a different short story for 30 days. We had to dig deep within ourselves for a message that you can be address within a story. I reflected on relationships from my past when I was about the same age as Lucy along with what I had witnessed as a bystander that I felt the need to bring the conversation to fiction and add a few twists on the story but still get my point across to young women of all ages to value their self-worth, trust and have faith, and most importantly open their heart to forgiveness and love.

When did you fall in love with the written word?
I fell in love with written word when I was in high school around the tenth grade when my English/literature teacher Mrs. Cooper had us to writer our first short story.

What’s the best part of being an author?
I get to talk and engage with readers and influencers of all walks of life.

What’s the hardest part of being an author?
The hardest part about being an author is getting myself in front of video and practicing what I preach to my clients.

What books have you read lately and loved?
I have read Brit Bennett’s The Vanishing Half, Delores Phillips—Darkest Child, Sheryl Lister—Do Me, and Barbara Joe Williams’ Loving My Daddy to Death.

What book(s) are you most excited to read next?
I am excited to read Toni Larue’s Elasped, Jacquelin Thomas’ Phoenix, Sadqua Johnson—Yellow Wife, and Tayari Jones—Silver Sparrow.

Who would you cast in a movie to play your main characters?
Oh wow, that is a tough one… Lucy Mason—Keke Palmer; Mother—Victoria Towsend, Father—Lamman Rucker.  There are so many great actors that I like that could play the roles in a movie.

What’s next for you?
I am currently wrapping up Lucy’s Faith set to release in July 13 and Lucy’s Heart in August.  I will finally finish up the sequel to my first book Deceitful Secrets with Truth & Lies set to release in later September early October.  That release date is still pending.

Do you have anything you would like to add?

Yes, finding my way back to writing this year has been therapeutic and refreshing. I am extremely excited to give birth to many more books to come in the future.
