Prolific author Sharon C. Cooper is tackling romantic comedy in her latest release. I recently spoke with her about Business Not As Usual.
Tell me about your latest book.
My latest book, Business Not As Usual, is my debut romcom, and it was a fun project to create. The story is about Dreamy Daniels, a financially challenged, quirky, and fun-loving woman who loves life, but has had a hard time at it. Lol. On top of that, she was recently publicly dumped by her attorney boyfriend who claimed she wasn’t cultured or sophisticated enough for him. Needless to say, his words break her heart, and Dreamy decides to take a break from men and work on herself. That includes rebuilding her confidence and focusing on some of her personal goals like finishing her degree in public administration and starting her nonprofit. Oh, and she’s determined to finally win the lottery since it’s at an all-time high. Lol. Who doesn’t dream of winning the lottery??
In the meantime, Dreamy catches the eye of a venture capitalist, who also happens to be the son of a famous movie star. She is shocked by his advances. She thinks, What does a guy like him want with someone like her when he can have any woman in the world? He’s the total package and so far out of her league. Dreamy can barely handle being in his presence. She and Karter are from two very different worlds and that’s abundantly clear almost immediately. Lol. But she wants nothing to do with another wealthy man. Been there. Done that. She’s not falling for his charm, but fate has other ideas, and Karter doesn’t give up easily.
What inspired you to write it?
This story idea came to me one day when the Powerball lottery was like $600 million, and I was thinking about playing. Lol. Then I thought, what if one of my characters—someone who needs a big break in life—won the lottery, and Dreamy Daniels was created. So many of us dream about what it would be like to win the lottery or come into a lot of money. I thought it would be fun to show someone actually winning it (in a funny way), while also allowing them to fall in love with someone who didn’t need money because they already had it.
When did you fall in love with the written word?
Unlike most authors/readers, I didn’t fall in love with the written word until I was in college. I had a professor—one who was the flyest sister I’d ever met (still)! Lol. Anyway, I wanted to be like her…and she read romance novels. Sooo, I started reading them, too, and devoured them! Then I started reading everything. Lol. Years later, I decided to write my own.
What’s the best part of being an author?
I enjoy making up stories and watching the characters come alive on paper. I have also enjoyed meeting and working with so many talented authors. And I absolutely LOVE interacting with my readers.
What’s the hardest part of being an author?
The hardest part about being an author… Hmm… Probably the fact that I have a demanding schedule with back-to-back deadlines. Between brainstorming, planning, writing, editing, marketing/promoting, and the list goes on and on, being a published author is no joke! Lol. This career makes for some long, exhausting days. Whew! Lol. Long days…
What books have you read lately and loved?
I loved, loved, loved Will by Will Smith! It was so inspiring and entertaining. I also enjoyed Beautiful Vengeance by Kaylea Cross and To Tempt A Husband by Lindsay Evans.
What book(s) are you most excited to read next?
I’m looking forward to reading One Perfect Night by A.C. Arthur and By Her Own Design by Piper Huguley.
Who would you cast in a movie to play your main characters?
Oh, this is easy. While I was writing Business Not As Usual, I pictured Tiffany Haddish and Laz Alonso. I can totally see them in the roles of my main characters—Dreamy Daniels and Karter Redford. What’s next for you?
I’m currently working on a few projects. Next up for me is Committed (Atlanta’s Finest). This story is a where-are-they-now type of story of a couple of my characters who are fan favorites (Laz and Journey). I’m also adding to my Reunited Series (finally) and that book is entitled Casino Heat. It’s a second chance/sports romance.
