Author Sherron Elise is back with a new series with her signature spiritual twist. I recently spoke to her about Game Time.
Tell me about your latest book.
Game Time is the first book in my new series, Married to the Game. The main characters are two cousins, Gya and Tatum, who have fallen in love with professional athletes. Both Gya and Tatum are in a power struggle. Gya is fighting to hold tightly to her faith and have a godly marriage in spite of her husband, Bryant’s, NFL fame. Tatum is struggling not to lose her identity after making the decision to drop out of college and follow her boyfriend, King, into his new life as an NBA superstar.
What inspired you to write it?
I have been a big sports fan since childhood. I’ve always enjoyed watching NFL and NBA games with the men in my family. The camera would often pan to the wife or girlfriend of a star player, and I’d often wonder about the lives of these women seated in the stands, cheering on their men as they play on the court or the field. I’ll also admit I’m guilty of reading pro athlete gossip blogs to get my creative wheels churning with storyline ideas. LOL!
When did you fall in love with the written word?
All throughout elementary school, my class would visit the library weekly to check out books and listen to story time. It was my favorite school activity, besides lunch and recess (hahaha).
What’s the best part of being an author?
Having a reader reach out to me and tell me how much they’ve enjoyed one of my books. I love to write stories that are entertaining to readers. Reading glowing reviews and receiving positive feedback from them confirms that I am walking in my purpose.
What’s the hardest part of being an author?
Placing pressure on myself to produce works of perfection.
What books have you read lately and loved?
I was blessed to receive an ARC of Kimberla Lawson Roby’s newest book, Sister Friends Forever, and I really enjoyed it. I also enjoyed Jilted by Niko Michelle.
What book(s) are you most excited to read next?
Voodoo by Brian W. Smith, along with The Black Hamptons by Carl Weber and La Jill Hunt.
Who would you cast in a movie to play your main characters?
Gya—Jasmine Luv (an up-and-coming actress who got her start on YouTube). Tatum—Courtney “CoCo” Jones (who currently stars as ‘Hilary’ on the Peacock series Bel-Air). Bryant—Tequan Richmond (Everybody Hates Chris, Boomerang the TV series). King—Bryshere Y. Gray (Empire).
What’s next for you?
This fall I will be a vendor at the National Black Book Festival in Houston, and I’ll also travel to Charlotte, North Carolina, to participate in the Christian Book Lover’s Retr
eat. I also plan to be hard at work on book two of the Married to the Game series which is tentatively titled, Interference.
Do you have anything you would like to add?
Yes, I’d like all readers to purchase a copy of Game Time and be kind enough to leave a review. And I invite any new readers of my work to join my private Facebook group, Sherron Elise’s Reading Corner. Lastly, please binge read all of the other titles within my book catalog. I greatly appreciate your support!
