Fall in Love with Romance Writer Belle Calhoune

March 31, 2023 by Chandra Sparks Splond

Romance writer Belle Calhoune is back with another installment in her Mistletoe, Maine series. I recently spoke with her about Falling in Love on Sweetwater Lane.

Tell me about your latest book.

Falling in Love on Sweetwater Lane is book 3 in my Mistletoe, Maine series. It centers around single dad, Nick Keegan, and the new veterinarian in town, Harlow Jones. Nick has been grieving the death of his wife while raising his young son. In order to explore a romance, both have to let go of the pain of the past and embrace a possible future.

Why did you decide to write it?

I like the idea of planting diverse characters in settings people might not expect to see them in. Maine was a vacation spot for my family when I was a kid, and I’ve never forgotten the icy cold waters, blueberry pancakes or the lovely inn my family stayed in. It’s a great setting for a romance.

Who is your favorite character in the book and why?

I love Harlow. She has a very cool profession as a veterinarian and is so close to her twin brother, Malcolm. She’s loyal and loving, and even though she’s been through a lot in her life, she keeps fighting for those she loves. She is a woman to risk her heart in the pursuit of love.

What was the hardest part about writing the story?

There are a lot of supporting characters and side stories, so it is challenging to tie those all together.

If you were to write a book about your life, what would be the title and why?

I’ve Had the Time of My Life. My life has been extremely blessed and wonderful.

What would you tell your 16-year-old self?

I would tell my 16-year old self to not worry too much about the failures, but to celebrate the victories.

What is something readers would be surprised to know about you?

That even though I write romance novels, I love to read thrillers and edge-of-the-seat suspense novels.

Tell me about a book that changed your life and why.

When I was about 12 or 13, my sister brought home a book for me from a book sale. It was Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier. This book rocked my world. It was gothic romance, and the story had romance, drama, murder plus twists and turns. To this day, it is one of my favorite books, and I read it again every few years. It created a desire in me to read and write romance novels. I highly recommend this book.

What’s next for you?

I recently signed another three-book contract with Grand Central for the Forever Line, so I am working on Book One at the moment. This new series set in Alaska centers around three brothers (the Stone Brothers) who head back to their hometown of Moose Falls for an inheritance.

Do you have anything you would like to add?

I’m really excited about this new series. The inheritance centers around a hard cider company, and the research I’m doing is interesting.
