Author Michelle Stimpson is back with a new release, and it’s the perfect blend of funny and heart-warming. I recently spoke with her about her latest release, Sisters with a Side of Greens.
Tell me about your latest book.
Sisters with a Side of Greens is the story of two sisters, Rose and Marvina, who had what my mother would call a “falling out” several years ago. Neither of them can truly recall exactly what happened–they have different versions–but the time has come for them to settle things. Rose is retired, Marvina is widowed, and they aren’t getting any younger. The one thing that they both agree on is that Momma’s secret spice mix needs to be preserved for future generations. But how is that supposed to happen when Rose wants to open a fancy restaurant and Marvina wants to give everything to the church?
When the unlikely team ends up supporting a teenage squatter, they’ll have to work through their conflicting memories, their feelings, and recreate the recipe that almost tore them apart.
Why did you decide to write it?
I love a good, funny, heart-warming southern fiction story, and I love to read about complex family relationships. So this story spoke to me on many levels.
What do you want readers to learn from the story?
I want readers to realize that we all have different perspectives about what happened in the past. And even if we never agree on what happened, that doesn’t mean we can’t stay in relationship. I think that this past decade, with the rise of “cancel culture,” the political climate, and even emerging technologies that test the boundaries of humanity, we have more than enough opportunities to become offended and separate ourselves. But that’s not how we work through differences and remain in healthy fellowship. Rose and Marvina’s story is one of letting go of “being right” and allowing people to be who they are.
When did you fall in love with the written word?
My mother used to say that I always had my nose in a book, so I don’t actually know when it happened. I just know that reading and writing fiction is a part of who I am.
If you could pick another profession, what would it be and why?
I think I’m still in another profession, actually. I am an educational consultant, so I get the best of both worlds as an artist and a teacher.
Who would you love to coauthor a book with?
I would love to co-author with Sadeqa Johnson. I loved The House of Eve, and I think our styles would mesh.
What books have you read lately and loved?
I’m reading two books (if that’s possible!). 1) The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store by James McBride. I’ve slowed down because I want to savor it. The laughs, the accents, the storyline–truly a book to savor. 2) Just started The American Queen by Vanessa Miller. I’m going to take my time with it, too.
What books are you most excited to read next?
Looking forward to reading The Queen of Sugar Hill by ReShonda Tate. I know it’s going to be awesome because ReShonda’s personality comes through in her books.
What’s next for you?
I’m moving into the wellness space through Journaling. It has been a huge part of my success and my spiritual development. I’d like to see more people enjoy the benefits of journaling as well.
Do you have anything you would like to add?
Nothing at this time. Thank you!
