Show Some Love to Author J.B. Vample

April 26, 2024 by Chandra Sparks Splond

You’ve never seen author J.B. Vample quite like this. I recently spoke with her about her latest release, Unlike Before.

Tell me about your latest book.
Unlike Before is a story about two people who all but gave up on finding love, yet ultimately find it in each other. With compelling Black characters, this strangers-to-lovers story not only follows the romance between Patience Harvey and Michael Carter, it also follows how the FMC overcomes and finally heals from the past trauma and family drama that has been holding her back from being truly happy. It’s a beautiful story that will take you through many different emotions.

Why did you decide to write it?
Like all stories that I’ve written, this story manifested itself in my mind out of nowhere. I immediately fell in love with the story and characters, and knew it was something that I needed to bring to life.

What do you want readers to learn from the story?
I want readers to learn that no matter what a person goes through in their past, that happiness is attainable.

When did you fall in love with the written word?
I’ve been in love with writing since I was a child. I was blessed with what I call an overactive imagination, which has allowed me to create characters and stories as far back as middle school. Writing is something I’d never stop doing, even if I never published another book.

If you could pick another profession, what would it be and why?
Probably a movie / TV show director or something of the sort. Being a writer, I bring the visions in my head to life, so if I wasn’t doing it on paper, I’d be doing it on a film set…I still might strive for that eventually.

Who would you love to coauthor a book with?
To be completely honest, I’ve never thought about it. I’m always just so focused on my own solo work. But if I had to choose, I’d say Tia Williams.

What books have you read lately and loved?
As much as I love reading, since I’ve been writing and publishing, I haven’t been reading books other than my own. But I have a TBR pile that is growing, and as soon as I take another writing break, I’ll be diving into it.

What books are you most excited to read next?
The next book that I’m looking forward to reading is Before I Let Go by Kennedy Ryan

What’s next for you?
Other than celebrating the release of Unlike Before, I’ll be promoting and touring for the book. I also started drafting a new novel a few months ago, so I’ll be working more on that. The ultimate goal for all of my books is to have a TV show or movie adapted, so I might be adding screenplay writing to my to-do list as well.

Do you have anything you would like to add?
Just that I appreciate you taking the time to interview me.
