Author Piper Huguley loves featuring strong black women in her work. I recently spoke with her about her latest release, American Daughters.
Tell me about your latest book.
American Daughters is about the secret interracial friendship between the daughters of two famous statesmen: President Theodore Roosevelt and Booker T. Washington. Alice and Portia remained friends for a little more than three fourths of the American Century, until Portia’s death in 1978.
How long did it take you to write it?
Just about a year.
Which character could you relate to the most and why?
Well, I guess Portia because she is the artist in the book. She had a love of Black culture and music, and I found her constant attempts to let people know about Black creativity inspirational.
How are you celebrating the book’s release?
Typical promo, but I’m going to California for some of the events this time.
Who is your author best friend (either in your head or in real life)?
Margaret Walker
What is the most valuable piece of writing advice you’ve received?
Once you have finished a project, get started on the next one right away.
What books have you read lately and loved?
Fallen Fruit by Shawntelle Madison and Legacy by Dr. Uche Blackstock
What books are you excited to read?
Looking forward to In A League of Her Own by Kaia Alderson and An Unexpected Diva by Tiffany Warren
What’s next for you?
Proposing the next great story of another unheralded, unknown Black woman. We must keep these stories going.
Do you have anything you would like to add?
Biographical historical fiction about Black women is in jeopardy. We must spread the word about these stories so that we can continue to incorporate these accomplished women into our history.
