Author Vanessa Riley continues to take the historical romance world by storm with her latest release. I recently spoke with her about A Gamble at Sunset.
Tell me about your latest book.
My latest book, A Gamble at Sunset, is a historical romance that is not quite like other Regencies you’ve read. It follows the story of Georgina Wilcox, a spirited wallflower with hidden musical talents, who finds herself entangled in scandal after a passionate embrace with the reticent composer Lord Mark Sebastian. Together, they embark on a daring journey to fool society while navigating family rivalries, sexist cartoons, and the complexities of love. There’s also a second-chance love simmering in the background with a duke who seems too good to be real.
How long did it take you to write it?
It took me approximately two months to write A Gamble at Sunset. I am a fast writer.
Which character could you relate to the most and why?
I relate most to Georgina Wilcox. She’s unconventional. She’s shy but bold when she needs to be. She has unresolved issues with family. I think many of us can relate to that. Like Georgie, I believe in the power of passion, music, and challenging societal norms.
How are you celebrating the book’s release?
I’m celebrating the book’s release with virtual launch parties, book signings, and engaging with readers through social media platforms. I have spread out tour schedule at books festivals and other special events. The full schedule is available on my website.
Who is your author best friend (either in your head or in real life)?
That’s a tough one. I love running through plots with author Denny S. Bryce. If I need a push on whether or not my hero should do something, I chat with Rhonda McKnight. I’m in awe of Beverly Jenkins’s stories and her research. Her groundbreaking work and dedication to portraying diverse and authentic stories in history continue to inspire me. Sadeqa Johnson is the best pep-talk person I know. I get goosebumps listening to her tell me get my act together.
What is the most valuable piece of writing advice you’ve received?
The most valuable piece of writing advice I’ve received is from Kristan Higgins. She tells me to write the most dangerous story I can. Never let up, until the end.
What books have you read lately and loved?
Recently, I’ve read and loved First Ladies by Marie Benedict and Victoria Christopher Murray. Absolutely fabulous. I’m currently reading Curvy Girl Summer by Danielle Allen and The Trial of Mrs. Rhinelander by Denny S. Bryce.
What’s next for you?
Book 3, Murder in Berkeley Square, the third installment in the Lady Worthing Series.
In this mystery, Lady Abigail Worthing, is thrust into a deadly game when a blizzard traps herself, her cousin, and her neighbor at a dinner where murders linked to a past injustice force her to uncover the truth, risking everything to stay alive and keep Florentina Sewell and Stapleton Henderson falling prey to Rebel Rhyme killer.
Do you have anything you would like to add?
I’d like to thank my readers for their support and encouragement. Your enthusiasm fuels my passion for storytelling. I’m excited to bring more captivating tales about our history that we can enjoy and be encouraged.
