Author Chencia C. Higgins puts a new twist on the friends-to-lovers trope. I recently spoke with her about A Little Kissing Between Friends.
Tell me about your latest book.
A Little Kissing Between Friends is a friends-to-lovers tale of two women who have a beautiful friendship that is definitely, mostly platonic, and what it looks like when they are both fighting not to lose this friendship that means the world to them while things are inexplicably changing.
How long did it take you to write it?
I’m not really sure the exact amount of time it took to write since I stopped and started a few times while life did its thing, but I believe it was over the course of about ten months.
Which character could you relate to the most and why?
I relate the most to the main femme character Jucee because we both believe we shouldn’t have to stop being That Girl just because we’re somebody’s mama.
How are you celebrating the book’s release?
I celebrated by having a release day event at my favorite local, Black-woman-owned, indie bookstore. I was in conversation with both Karmen Lee and the attendees. It was great.
Who is your author best friend (either in your head or in real life)?
I have so many author besties in my head LOL. Some of them I’ve spoken to before so I won’t say their names and have them looking at me funny next time I see them.
What is the most valuable piece of writing advice you’ve received?
That would be “Keep your eyes on your own paper,” and it has served me well over the years.
What books have you read lately and loved?
I recently read Alexandria House’s Assist and Karmen Lee’s The 7/10 Split and loved them both.
What books are you excited to read?
I’m excited to read Love and Sportsball by Meka James which comes out in September.
What’s next for you?
I’m working on my next traditionally published sapphic romance and also the follow up to one of my more popular indie projects.
