Author K.D. Richards Finds the ‘Key’ to Her Success

November 13, 2024 by Chandra Sparks Splond

Author K.D. Richards has a lot to be thankful for this November with a couple of new releases for readers. I recently spoke with her about Under Lock and Key.

Tell me about your latest book.
Under Lock and Key is the 11th book in the West Investigations series. In it, Maggie Scott is a museum curator who walks in on the theft of a priceless artifact. West Investigations’ new West Coast office is in charge of the security for the museum, and they send one of their best operatives, Kevin Lombard, to investigate. Kevin and Maggie were college sweethearts, and when Maggie becomes a target of the thieves he vows to protect her and find the artifact.

How long did it take you to write it?
I’m a pretty fast writer. It took me about three months to write the book from start to a solid draft to send to my editor.

Which character could you relate to the most and why?
I related most to Maggie. I’ve never studied art myself, but I’ve always thought it must be great to work in a museum. Being near all the culture and pieces of art with so much history would be amazing. Maggie is also a strong woman, and I connected with her desire to be involved in the investigation and search for the artifact.

How are you celebrating the book’s release?
Well, I usually like to treat myself to a nice dinner (or lunch). I enjoy food, but I’m a terrible cook, 🙂

What actors would you select to play your characters?
I’m terrible at pop culture stuff, so I know no one, but I’m watching the miniseries Fight Night, and there are two actors I really like in it Teresa Celeste and Melvin Gregg who I think could play the parts well.

What is the most valuable piece of writing advice you’ve received?
Just keep writing. It’s hard work, and it’s a learn by doing kind of thing. Some days are harder than others, but if you keep going and keep learning every draft, every manuscript will be better than the last.

What books have you read lately and loved?
What Fire Brings by Rachel Howzell Hall. It was fantastic as are all her books.

What books are you excited to read?
Actually, another Rachel Howzell Hall book, The Last One. It’s a fantasy, and I’ve been on a fantasy kick lately, so I’m looking forward to that book when it comes out.

What’s next for you?
I’ve got a new series I’m working on. It’s going to be set in Washington, D.C., my hometown stomping grounds so I’m excited about that.

Do you have anything you would like to add?
