Author K.D. Richards Has ‘Killer’ Instincts

October 1, 2025 by Chandra Sparks Splond

Author K.D. Richards is back with her new Guardians of Justice series. I recently spoke with her about Killer on the Potomac.

Tell me about your latest book.
Killer on the Potomac is about police detective Dora Madison who [knows] a serial killer is at work in Washington, DC, but her superiors refuse to listen until a US senator’s daughter is killed. Her cases suddenly become the highest of profile, and FBI profiler Logan Elkins is assigned to Dora’s team. Logan is Dora’s ex-boyfriend who left her when he joined the FBI.  As Dora and Logan track down increasingly explosive leads, they battle to keep their turbulent history in the past and their relationship professional. But with their target closing in on them, Dora and Logan have to put their animosity aside and the budding desire between them and find a killer.

How long did it take you to write it?
It took me about three and half months to write the first draft. Then of course there was editing and copyediting.  All in all it takes about six months before the book is completely out of my hands.

Which character could you relate to the most and why?
I identify with both Logan and Dora in the sense that they are from the DC area as am I. I think I may identify with Logan just a little more because of his relationship with his siblings.

How are you celebrating the book’s release?
I usually celebrate the release with something sweet, and I’ll probably do the same this time.

Who is your author best friend (either in your head or in real life)?
Oh gosh. There are some many great authors that have befriended me on this writing journey. Fellow Intrigue author Denise N. Wheatley, Kattie Mettner, Tati Richardson and so many more.

What is the most valuable piece of writing advice you’ve received?
To keep writing. I love this job, and it is so much fun and so very rewarding, but it is hard! There are times when I’m not inspired or have no idea where a story should go next, but you have to write through the hard times.

What books have you read lately and loved?
I’m finally getting to some of my TBR list so I’ve just finished Serpent & Dove, and I really enjoyed it.

What books are you excited to read?
My TBR list is longer than I could ever hope to get through, but I’m excited about picking up Love You To Death by Christina Dotson.

What’s next for you?
I’m very excited about the Guardian of Justice series. The next book after Killer on the Potomac is Death by Data and that will be out in November 2025.

Do you have anything you would like to add?
Just to look out for books 2 and 3 in the Guardians of Justice series: Death by Data in November 2025 and Cold Case Cover-up in April 2026.
