Author Lynn Emery is back with the fifth book in her Joliet Sisters Psychic Detectives series.
When did you fall in love with the written word?
When I learned to read! We were poor, and my mother didn’t own a car. That meant I took very few trips past my neighborhood. Discovering stories took to me faraway places, new worlds, and people.
Tell me about your latest book.
Die Trying is the fifth book in the Joliet Sisters Psychic Detectives series.
A Louisiana state senator and a B-List former actor. What do they have in common? Kinky sex, drugs, and death. Private detectives Charmaine and Jessi Joliet take on two different cases with a tangle of lies, secrets, and betrayal. These female sleuths use their psychic skills and street smarts to outwit a voodoo priestess, scheming thugs, and a gang of deadly ghosts to solve two murders.
New Orleans is exotic, fun, steamy, musical… and full of bloody supernatural secrets. Follow along as two sisters track down whodunit among the living and dead.
Why did you decide to write it?
I enjoy writing series mysteries, and this story is simply the latest in what will be at least two more.
What do you want readers to learn from the story?
I don’t aim to teach lessons. I write popular fiction to tell a good story that entertains. That said, there is a subplot about identity. The past affects who we are and who we think we are.
If you could pick another profession, what would it be and why?
I would have enjoyed being a forensic scientist and doing research to improve solving crimes and mysteries. Especially if it involved traveling.
What’s the best part of being an author?
Telling stories that are unique and surprising. I love surprising people with plot twists.
What’s the worst part of being an author?
Editing and revisions. I dislike it intensely. Mentally I never think in terms of the first draft, the second draft, and “I’ll fix that stuff later.” I write as though once I get to the final sentence that’s it. Done and ready to release. But the reality is of course different.
Reading the entire book again with a red pen is torture. I’m a perfectionist. I whine (internally, not out loud) through the entire process of reading, putting notes in the margins, then making the changes. But it makes my copyeditor’s job easy and saves money.
What’s next for you?
I developed a new mystery series set in the near future—2085 is when the first book starts. The protagonist has a master’s in social work and a doctorate in forensic sociology. Dr. Zenobia Batiste (Zen to her friends) specializes in how new and emerging space colony societies affect criminal behavior and vice versa. She’s also a trained criminal investigator. I’m writing that story now.
