If you follow any black book enthusiasts on social media, then chances are very high you’ve heard conversations about the Black Series by prolific author Joan Vassar. She’s here today to discuss the latest book in the series, The Fort.
Tell me about your latest book.
My newest title is The Fort. It is Book 5 in the Black Series
Why did you decide to write it?
The Fort is my contribution to black literature. The series is my love letter to black folks everywhere. The books are a celebration of black men, black love, black community and black orgasm.
What do you want readers to learn from the story?
Writing historical fiction is a labor of love. Black people have a history that is greater than picking cotton. Historical fiction is not a white genre—all races have history.
If you could pick another profession, what would it be and why?
I want to be a lawyer—I like hearing myself talk
When did you fall in love with the written word?
I wrote my first story in third grade and considered a career in journalism. I fell in love with the writing word in my early twenties.
What’s something readers would be surprised to know about you?
I love gangsta rap and trap music. FRFR
What books have you read lately and loved?
Let Me Love You by Alexandria House—I loved it!!! I stayed up late and turned into a zombie.
What books are you excited to read?
Heartbreak U by Johnni Sherri

I’m looking forward to finishing my Unfortunate Series.
Do you have anything you would like to add?
I love my readers. They make my heart sing.
