Christian fiction author She Nell is back with another installment in The Flawed but Faithful series. I recently spoke with her about Carrying the Cross.
Tell me about your latest book.
Diamond dreams of opening her own restaurant. Unfortunately, her dream is everyone’s nightmare. If she is going to build her empire, she must do it alone. After learning the truth about her greatest enemy, Diamond finds support, but it is killing her slowly. Diamond is determined, smart and talented, but can she have her cake and eat it too?
Why did you decide to write it?
A couple of years ago I was having a bad day and went to Starbucks. That is what I did on my bad days “white chocolate mocha hot with almond milk no whip.” I happen to be on the phone venting to my mother who said, “Be mindful of where you run to get relief from your problems.” That is when the story idea first entered my mind.
Who is your favorite character in the book and why?
Carla. Although she is not the main character, I love her sassiness.
What was the hardest part about writing the story?
Parts of the book are very emotional. There is a chapter where Diamond must face the death of a loved one. That chapter was very hard to write because it came from a very real, extremely vulnerable place.
If you were to write a book about your life, what would be the title and why?
Broken Mirrors
I have had to break many reflections of myself to value and be at peace with how God made me and who He called me to be.
What would you tell your 16-year-old self?
Don’t put down your pen. You are going to do it no matter what you have been told. You will see your name on the cover of many books. You are not crazy. Your dream will be your reality.
What is something readers would be surprised to know about you?
I binge watch Ancient Aliens, low budget Shark movies, and I don’t like ice cream.
Tell me about a book that changed your life and why.
One Sunday at a Time by E.N. Joy because until reading her book I didn’t know Christian fiction was a thing. Prior to finding her book I stopped reading for a couple of years.
What’s next for you?
I am working on a standalone. I am excited because it is a love story.
Do you have anything you would like to add?
Thank you, BFA, for always being there for me and our community. You are truly a blessing.
