JacQuan Winters Looks for Sunshine after a ‘Rainy Day’

December 11, 2019 by Chandra Sparks Splond

Nothing could have prepared JacQuan Winters, founder and executive director of the Kristen Amerson Youth Foundation, for the day his 11-year-old sister committed suicide. In an effort to help others avoid his pain, he wrote Kristen’s Rainy Day.

Tell me about your book, Kristen’s Rainy Day.
Kristen’s Rainy Day is a children’s book written to keep the memory of my younger sister, Kristen, alive. The book uses Kristen as the main character to teach a valuable lesson. Kristen’s Rainy Day teaches children how to remain positive through negative situations.

Why did you decide to write it?
God gave me the vision to write the book. He placed the idea on my heart and I was obedient.

What do you want readers to learn from the story?
I want readers to learn that we all have rainy days, but we have to keep a positive outlook and make it through our bad days to see sunny days.

What do you want readers to learn from your sister’s life?
Suicide isn’t an option. Our children are struggling and we have to be there for them. By learning the signs of suicide, we have a great chance to save our children and to help them through their struggles.

What has been the biggest lesson you’ve learned as a result of your sister’s death?
I’m not sure how to answer this. It’s a reality that I live every day. Ultimately, we have to show love while our loved ones are here. We can’t take life for granted.

What advice do you have for a person who thinks someone they know is considering suicide?
You’re not alone and your life has purpose. There’s people who’s willing and wants to help. 1-800-273-8255 is the Suicide Prevention Hotline. Use it if you’re struggling. It’s okay to not be okay.

What’s next for JacQuan Winters?
Not sure. I’m taking one day at a time and letting God lead me.

Do you have anything you would like to add?
Thanks for the opportunity.
