Tell me about your latest book.
The Wife Before is about a woman who marries too quickly and discovers journals form her husband’s first wife. It’s suspenseful and thrilling and full of twists.
What inspired you to write it?
It’s a story that has nagged at me for years! I wanted something that felt haunting, with a chill factor…but with Black people in it. So I wrote what I was craving.
When did you fall in love with the written word?
Oh, I was just a little kid. I want to say as soon as I learned how to read on my own. I’ve always loved words.
What’s the best part of being an author?
Being able to create my own schedule.
What’s the hardest part of being an author?
Balancing work life and my personal life. It gets a little tricky when there are deadlines in the way while also having a family who has needs.
What books have you read lately and loved?
I am currently reading Allegedly by Tiffany D. Jackson and am absolutely LOVING it!
What book(s) are you most excited to read next?
I’m excited for Tiffany’s D. Jackson’s upcoming release, The Weight of Blood. I already have it pre ordered!!!
Who would you cast in a movie to play your main characters?
Oh— that’s hard for me! LOL. But I think for Roland (the husband), Terrence Howard would be a pretty good fit. He can be both soft and aggressive when acting. Or even Michael Ealy. As for Samira, I’m not quite sure.
What’s next for you?
My book, The Other Mistress, comes out July 2023 and it’s set sort of in the same world as The Perfect Ruin and The Wife Before! It’s a bit twisted. Brace yourselves for that one!
