Dr. Tammie McCurry wants readers to know there is hope. I recently spoke to her about her book Under The Shadow: Our Journey with Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD).
Tell me about your book.
In Under The Shadow: Our Journey with Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD), members of the McCurry family share their testimony of how prayer and faith guided them through a 17-year struggle with an incurable disease. Each person shares their unique challenges and how their faith in God grew as a result of this devastating medical diagnosis.
Why did you decide to write it?
The Lord had impressed upon my heart for us to share our story with the world so that others who may be dealing with sickness, financial stressors, or emotional challenges will find hope in our story. Additionally, as a therapist, I understand the importance of using your story as an avenue for healing. As my husband, our six daughters, and I shared our 17-year journey throughout the pages of the book, God healed us from the trauma of our experiences.
What do you want readers to learn from the story?
It is my desire that readers learn from this story that regardless of what challenges life may throw their way, God has the final say. It is my hope that this story will bring hope to those who may feel hopeless.
What do you want readers to learn from your life?
I want readers to learn that God is real, and He still answers prayers. I also want them to remember that there is hope in God, and He is still performing miracles. I want wives to know that the vows you take on your wedding day are for a lifetime, not just as long as things are going well. I want parents not to shelter their children, but to share with them the hard things the family may be facing so the children can embrace the power of prayer and faith.
How do you juggle being a wife and mom with pursuing your dreams?
By putting God first and remembering my “why”. I have to remind myself why I do what I do. Then I give myself permission not to be perfect. There are some days the clothes may not get folded and the dishes may not all get washed, but if my family is content, I have honored the first ministry God gave me.
What’s the hardest part about writing your book?
The hardest part about writing this book was that each contributing author had no idea of what anyone else was writing. I asked each to write about their experience and feelings related to dealing with polycystic kidney disease. As I received each draft, I knew how important it was that the book flowed, so I spent a great deal of time in prayer believing God to put the book together just as He had intended.
What’s next for Dr. Tammie McCurry?
To continue to utilize every open door and platform to encourage women and families not to give up no matter how hopeless a situation may appear. I want to tell our story to whoever will listen. God has been truly faithful to our family, and I will be forever grateful. Therefore, I will continue to serve Him for the rest of my life. My service will be in the form of me preaching the gospel from the pulpit; providing encouraging words at empowerment seminars/workshops; and praying for families that are struggling with kidney disease or any other disease or emotional challenges.
Do you have anything you would like to add?
We are so grateful to the Alabama Kidney Foundation that provided financial resources during my husband’s illness. As a result, we are committed to donating a portion of the proceeds back to the foundation to help other families as they focus on healing and wholeness. We are appreciative to each person that purchases a copy of the book on Amazon.com because it allows us to continue to help others.
